A STORY ON ATAM NIRBHAR BHARAT - IAF KANPUR CANTT

 

Strictly speaking this is not an MHS story. I have just too many of those. But it is a story of Kanpur Cantt and what happened a long time ago. It is a story of Atma Nirbhar Bharat and clever people with indomitable spirit, who worked to give India some teeth when it was needed. Their names are long forgotten. 

 The story begins in 1948 during the Kashmir operations. During those desperate days the IAF was in operations to assist 160 Brigade in repelling the Pakistani invaders. India had no heavy bombers except the Tempest a fighter bomber with very low payload in bombs. Improvisation was used and transport Dakotas converted to bombers with bombs literally rolled off the aircraft esp. in assisting the besieged garrisons in Poonch and Uri. After the cease fire in late 1948, there was a serious rethink

In the fog of war, a lot of misinformation flies. Ill-informed but self styled defence experts and politicians always push through home made theories. 

Some of these so called experts had perhaps never ever seen high altitude terrain in their entire life or service careers. But they must appear on TV channels to narrate true lies. This is what had happened about the scuffle that ensued between Indian and Chinese troops in Galwan Valley of Eastern Ladakh on 15/16 June 2020. 

Galwan in Kashmiri dialect means "Strong Man" or a Pehelwan (Wrestler). The river emanates at AKSAI Chin and flows East to West for 80 Kms through gorges of high mountains at 17,000 feet. It joins Shyok River in the Shyok Valley. 

HOLIKA DAHAN - MULTAN

*Holi*  originated from Multan Bharat, but from 1947 after a brutal  partition, it's now in Pakistan, where the last ruins of the ancient Prahladpuri Temple still exists after it was destroyed by a Jihadi mob in 1992.  Do not forget this when burning the *Holika Dahan* with your family for Holi.

The Indian Army blotched-up operations at Oting in Nagaland have given a fresh clamour for the repeal of AFSPA. The deaths are highly regrettable and I can understand the anguish and sorrow of the families of victims. My heart also goes out to all those who died there including a soldier. The initial firing took place due to mistaken identity or faulty intelligence. However, more casualties occurred when the villagers attacked the army men, who had no option but to exercise their right of private defence. The next day the civil administration did not pre-empt the anger of the locals, who in hundreds again attacked an Assam Rifles Post in Mon. The post fired in self-defence and one more civilian was killed. In all, 14 civilians died, two vehicles and a building of security forces were burnt, one soldier died and a number of civilians and security personnel were admitted to hospital for injuries.

Add to that the façade of war crime trials in Dacca and the clamor becomes louder more sinister. In this huge racket, Indians and Bangladeshis are quite clear and single minded in their narratives. This Napoleon was one of the four architects of Operation Koh Paima, commonly known as the Kargil operation.

In her book, From Kargil to the Coup, journalist Nasim Zehra calls them the Kargil clique. Cabal would be a better word to describe them because, as Zehra says, "These generals planned operation KP [Koh Paima] less as intelligent and accountable strategists [and more] as covert, unaccountable campaigners."

BATTLE OF SEHJRA - 1971

Battle of Sehjra that secured Harike Barrage

In the 1971 war, 48 Infantry Brigade gave a bloody nose to the Pakistanis in every battle, removed the threat to Harike Barrage and established supremacy over enemy troops. Pakistan's casualties were at least 70 killed, around 300 wounded and 74 prisoners of war. Large quantities of arms and ammunition were captured.

Advances in technology have drastically changed the way we live today compared to those of our ancient past. One type of technology that many of us may take for granted is the ability to communicate with others over long distances, or to large groups of people. A look back at ancient civilizations can give us insight today into the very first methods of long-distance communications. In 350 BC, a Greek named Aeneas invented the hydraulic telegraph, which was a means of communicating important, fairly detailed information, quickly over long distances.

SWEET MEMOIRS - MHOW N BELGAUM

Mhow and Belgaum are Cantonments tucked in to the cosy folds of the hillocks and enjoyed once a "status" of a "non fan station". Fans were later added by putting metal hooks and brackets on the ceiling which were high with long stems in the first place.

Another thing common between both the Cantonments is that they have the two major infantry training nodes. Those of us who trained there, are very familiar with the Kulfi wallah and the Kunda of these places respectively.

Kulfi wallah in Mhow, would come around in a rickety scooter with a bell beat and would do many rounds.
