*National Defence Academy: Glimpses*

1. *NDA* was conceived at the end of WW-II when the need for jointness

⚔️⚓✈️ was felt for Modern Warfare.💡

2. NDA was raised as *JSW (Jt Services Wing)* on 01 Jan 49 at Dehradun.✨

3. *Nehru* laid the *fdn👷🏽‍♂️👷🏼‍♀️ of NDA at K'wasla on 06 Oct 49* and called it *'Monument in Making'*.🏛️

4. The famous *Naval Mast* was given to NDA on *10 Oct 49* at *Dehradun*.⚓⚓

5. Coys were renamed as *Sqns* & Pl as *Div* on *21 Mar 50*.🖋️✒️

6. *First PoP*💂🏼‍♀️ was conducted on *09 Dec 50* with *172 cdts* & *Gen Cariappa as the RO*. Comdt,DCCI & Adjt were on the deck.🎊

7. *Manning the mast*⛵ by jr cdts started with very 1st PoP , credit goes to *Lt Cdr Trevor D Almeida*.👨🏽‍✈️

8. NDA *began functioning at Khadakwasla on 16 Jan 55*.🌻🌻

9. NDA is closely *modelled on the lines of West Point*, the only Inter Service Academy that time.

10. The *NDA motto*

*'Service Before Self'* is actually English translation of *'Nishkam Karma'*.In 50's *'Seva Parmo Dharma'* was adapted.🕯️🪔

11. The *HOR* and *Open Theatre* (near D2 circle) was *built by cdts in the spirit of Shramdan*.🫂🛠️

12. *Shashi Kapoor*🎼 got engaged 💞to his wife Jennifer at the backstage of this open theatre.🎷🎻

12. The *I & K sqn*🏛️ were converted into a *Hosp and offr mess* initialy.🚑🏥

13. *Admiral Katari* hit off the 1st ball to declare *Golf crse* open on 05 Dec 59.*Lt Gen Jetley renamed it JFC* in 1994.🏌🏽‍♂️🏌🏾‍♀️

14. The main bldg was named *Sudan on 30 May 59 by Syed Rahmat Abdulla*,the Ambassador of  Sudan for India.🕌

15. In Nov 58 *Services XI played against the West Indies* 🏏at *Bombay Stadium*.🏟️

16. *Jan 60 NDA contingent* took part in *Republic Day* Parade.🇮🇳💂🏼‍♀️💂🏼‍♀️

17. NDA was *affiliated to the JNU* on 31 Aug 73.🏯🏢

18. Jul 71 the *Degree syllabus was intro with the 46th crse*.📋📔📚

19. *30 May 75*-The *traditional bashing* of the passing out crse by the jr in *L sqn* resulted in the *death of one cdt*.The *sqn was disbanded* and rebuilt.💣

20. *M & N sqn* were born at *Ghorpadi* in Jul 77.🏛️🏛️

21. *16 Dec78* - *Presidential colour* were presented to NDA by *Neelam Reddy*.🏳️🏳️

22. *Comdt banner* was replace by *COAS banner* in AT 80.

23. Till 1981 the *Adjt horse*🐴 always stood ahead of the champion sqn at every PoP.

24.In Jul 81 *RA RP Sawhney* became the *frst Ex NDA offr to be posted as the Comdt*.

25. Dec 90 *NDA wing closed at Ghorpadi* with the raising of No 4 Bn.

26.  Stone Frigate *TS Ronnie Pereira*🛳️ was constr in Jan 2006.

27. The *Gliders of AFTT* during the towed glider era were - *Sedberg,Eon Baby,Eon Olympia, Rohini,Ardhara*.

28. *Super Dimona*✈️ were materialised in *Sep 2000, Wg Cdr Prabhakaran* was the OIC AFTT.

29. Dimonas are *Austrian origin* with a *Rotax R 912 A3 engine of 81 HP*.It has a *54 ft Wg span* and a *glide ratio of 1:27*.Its *max speed is 261 kmph*.🛫🛬

30. *ATC tower*🗼 was intro in 2005 at the AFTT.

31. Earlier the Bn were named after the Comdt - *Mahadeo,Thimayya & Wadalia* - they were *rechristened numerically*  to maintain inter service spirit.✈️⚓⚔️

32. *Jan 52 Academy Cricket team*🏏🏏 won the *Cooch Behar trophy* beating Bombay in the finals.🏆🏆

33. NDA football team played *Durand Cup final in Nov 53*.⚽⚽

34. *Admiral Shekhawat* is the frst *gold medal* 🏅🏅winner of NDA to become a *Service Chief*. 

35. *Lt Gen Lahiri ( 5th crse) captained Indian football team* - perhaps only NDA cdt to do so.⚽⚽

36. *Frst hand glider*✈️ in India was made by *Lt Col Mundkar* ( 28th crse) in 1976.

37. *Wg Cdr Malhotra & Wg Cdr Sharma* were the two ex NDA offrs selected for *space visit*🚀🚀. Sharma's name was finalised only 24 hrs before launch👩🏽‍🚀.

38. *Rakesh Sharma was world's 138th Cosmonaut*🚀👩🏽‍🚀 and was awarded Hero of the Soviet union and Ashok Chakra.

39. The *psn of the colours painting* at the *Comdt sect* was *painted by cdt Arul Raj* of 35th crse.👨🏽‍🎨

40. The *38 th crse* gave *one PVC ( khetrapal) and one AC ( NJN)*.🏅🪖

41. The *35 to 39 crse* were at the cutting of combat during the *71 War* whereas *90 to 95th crse* during *Kargil War*.⚔️⚔️

42. The *frst crse* gave all 

*three Chiefs* - *Rodrigues,Ramdas & Suri*.⚔️⚓✈️

43. The *47th crse ( Dec 74)* with *141 cdts* is the *smallest crse* till date.🤷🏽‍♂️
