 Ayman Mohd Rabie al-Zawahiri, born 1951, is the current leader of Al Qaeda and has pledged his support to Mullah Mansoor, the Taliban chief killed last year in Pakistan by a US drone strike. It was sometime in 2001. At a gathering hosted by Gomantak, the leading newspaper in Goa, I was explaining to someone the 100 year scenarios of urbanisation of Goa. These scenarios were the result of the Goa 2101 model that I had built. I had no idea someone was eavesdropping on the conversation, perhaps because of my passionate expression, or else because it was just more than a bit crazy to talk about 100 years in future when no one talked of even 100 days. Least of all did I know, that that someone was the then chief minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar.

           As we graduated from NDA to the IMA, our camp inventory also went for an upgrade. From Section level, our training elevated to Platoon level and we were now being trained to become Platoon Commanders. So, in addition to the section weapons, a 2 inch mortar, fondly called the "Platoon Commander ka Topkhana"(Platoon Commander's Artillery) got added to the training curriculum.

      General Rajinder Singh was a Jamwal Rajput from Jammu who rose to command the State Forces of Jammu and Kashmir. His heroic ancestor General Baj Singh had sacrificed his life in the defence of Chitral. General Rajinder Singh Jamwal was the first Indian to be decorated with the second highest gallantry award the Mahavir Chakra posthumously and most deservedly so.

The only way to end her terror was to behead her. Perseus, the Greek warrior, did this. By this act of beheading Medusa, he brought peace to Sarpedon.
On 14 August 1947, a part of the British Indian Army separated from its mother organization and became the Pakistan Army. It retained the flavor of its British creator; the parties, the spit and polish, the gin in the afternoon and whiskey in the evening, the 'hard as hobnailed leather' ethos and the drill square. Its officers were Pakistani in skin-tone but British in thinking. "Brown Sahibs" would have been an apt description. 

We were no different.

ROME AT LAST

Now I come to some of the experiences I had in Nigeria and other overseas countries.
After spending a few weeks in Onitsha, Nigeria, where my brother, Umesh, had invited us, and Basanti was offered an English-conversation-teaching job, attracting much-needed foreign exchange, I alone was on my way to India for offering my resignation and starting a new life in Nigeria. The Alitalia flight from Lagos was via Rome; the very names, Rome, Italy, Europe were thrilling. For a long time it was my ambition which was about to be fulfilled. I had spent hours under the blue sky at Sunderbani praying fervently for a trip to Europe. My wish was about to be fulfilled; I had to take the last step. It was inexplicably thrilling and exciting. Movies like 'Roman Holiday' and 'Three Coins in the Fountain' flashed past.
