1962 - TRAGEDY - MESSED UP

How Nehru's proteges messed it up

Claude Arpi
This article is dedicated to all those who died during the 1962 Sino-Indian war; to those who suffered for months in the PoW camps in Tibet; to those who were humiliated for no fault of theirs; to their families.

Let us hope that what happened in 1962 will never happened again, prays Claude Arpi

GEN HARBAKSH WHO SAVED PUNJAB - 1965

The general who saved Punjab in the 1965 War

By Gurmeet Kanwal    September 7, 2015

Lieutenant General Harbakhsh Singh, GOC, Western Command, disobeyed the then army chief and took on a superior Pakistani armoured column. The Indian Centurion tanks outgunned the more modern Pakistani Patton tanks in the battle at Khem Karan, that proved the turning point of the 1965 War.

Brigadier Gurmeet Kanwal (retd) salutes the Soldiers' General.

Some war images stick permanently in the mind and that of Lieutenant General Harbakhsh Singh, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, standing atop the Haji Pir Pass after its capture by India during the 1965 war with Pakistan, is one of them.

HOW CHINA PREPARED FOR 1962 WAR

Revealed: How China prepared for 1962 war

Ajai Shukla    December 15, 2017

From March 1959 to March 1962, the PLA fought 12 major battles in central Tibet which was seen as an opportunity to train China's soldiers, notes Ajai Shukla.

In pathbreaking research into the Tibetan uprising between 1956 and 1959, and the lead-up to the 1962 war, Chinese scholar Jianglin Li has accessed Chinese Communist Party documents and interviewed People's Liberation Army veterans from that war to present critical new aspects of that period's history.

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to interview one of the most renowned Indian mountaineers, who had chosen to live like local folks in the Himalaya.

More than half-a-century after humiliation in the 1962 war, India is still not prepared to take on the Chinese dragon.

Every now and then, that dragon flexes its muscles, reminding India the threat persists, says Virendra Kapoor.

Do they ever learn?

Within minutes of the top secret Henderson Brooks report into the 1962 Chinese debacle being posted on a Web site, the government moved fast to block access.

The exploits of Captain (later Brigadier) Prashanta Kumar Ghosh form an important part of the history of the Corps of Signals during the operations for the liberation of Bangla Desh in 1971. Strangely enough, the story has never been told, partly because of the innate modesty of the person involved. For this lapse, the Corps also must share a part of the blame. Had he been from any other arm or service, there is little doubt that he would have been made much of.

WHO IS GOVT OF INDIA

Hilarious !   - All my life I have wondered, 'Who is Govt of India (GOI)?'.

In 1978, I was interviewed by the president of India (Sanjeeva Reddy) for the post of an ADC. In my zealous enthusiasm, after a bit of chatting with the Supreme Commander, I asked him with sincere naivety whether he was GOI. He very absentmindedly said 'No'. I was so disappointed that I immediately told him that I do not wish to be his ADC (Air Chief Mulgaonkar skinned me for it).

IMA - AUG 1947 PARTITION

Partition of the IMA by Maj Gen Jagatbir Singh (Retd)

My father used to tell me often how when he was a Gentlemen Cadet as part of the Third Regular Course in the Indian Military Academy (IMA) during Partition, all the cadets were summoned by the then Commandant, Brigadier AB Barltrop, to the ante room and asked whether they would like to remain in India or be sent to Pakistan. The time to decide was a matter of hours and young men in their teens without access to any sort of communication had to make this decision. It was broadly mandated that all Hindu and Sikh Gentleman Cadets were to remain in India and all Muslims belonging to Pakistan were to remain in Pakistan. The Muslim cadets from India were free to choose their country of residence. The Christian and Parsi cadets, too, could opt for any country.

FAUJI LIFE-10  - DINNER NIGHT

A  Dinner Night is a parade, as stiff as any military parade.  Originally designed to keep the British Officers out of mischief, it achieved the same purpose post-independence. It also helped to keep the Mess staff up-skilled. It was essential in the days when Officers married late and the strength of single/dinning In members was always 6-10. Things have changed over the years. Fewer officers, advent of TV , Social media and expanded commitments. Those were days of White/Blue Patrols ( Summer/Winter Mess Dress) and General Sundarjee had not yet introduced the 6B.

This is a comparitive study between Bhisma and Jatayu. Both, of them were confronted with character defining asssault on womanhood. One chose to die protecting the victim while the other chose to be a mute spectator of the crime. You will be shocked to see the similarities of the situation they faced.
