It was sometime in 2001. At a gathering hosted by Gomantak, the leading newspaper in Goa, I was explaining to someone the 100 year scenarios of urbanisation of Goa. On 14 August 1947, a part of the British Indian Army separated from its mother organization and became the Pakistan Army. It retained the flavor of its British creator; the parties, the spit and polish, the gin in the afternoon and whiskey in the evening, the 'hard as hobnailed leather' ethos and the drill square. Its officers were Pakistani in skin-tone but British in thinking. "Brown Sahibs" would have been an apt description.

Now I come to some of the experiences I had in Nigeria and other overseas countries.
After spending a few weeks in Onitsha, Nigeria, where my brother, Umesh, had invited us, and Basanti was offered an English-conversation-teaching job, attracting much-needed foreign exchange, I alone was on my way to India for offering my resignation and starting a new life in Nigeria.             The current exercise being undertaken by the Indian Army is reportedly to make it lean and mean. Whatever the interpretation, the main gain is supposed to be savings to the tune of Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 crore annually which can be used towards modernisation. Just last year, the government appointed the Shekatkar Committee had submitted its recommendations to the MoD saying if all its recommendations are implemented, Rs 25,000 crore will be saved. Ironically, the MoD only implemented what suited the bureaucracy. Army Base Workshops (ABW) were placed directly under the MoD after being privatised and posted with civilian defence employees. In addition, Military Farms were taken over by the MoD – imported cows, infrastructure and most importantly, defence land.

If one can write about the incompetence of serving air marshals even better. It all gets published in this egroup, veterans group, Air Force group and from there by WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter across the globe. 1. Letter dated March 22, 1788, to Abdul Kadir: "Over 12,000 Hindus were honoured with Islam. There were many Namboodri Brahmins among them. This achievement should be widely publicised among the Hindus. Then the local Hindus should be brought before you and converted to Islam. No Namboodri Brahmin should be spared. "

They had petitioned that they be protected from prosecution by law in case of collateral deaths in disturbed areas where they are deployed in counter insurgency operations.
