As we graduated from NDA to the IMA, our camp inventory also went for an upgrade. From Section level, our training elevated to Platoon level and we were now being trained to become Platoon Commanders. So, in addition to the section weapons, a 2 inch mortar, fondly called the "Platoon Commander ka Topkhana"(Platoon Commander's Artillery) got added to the training curriculum.

ELEPHANTS

ELEPHANTS IN MoD

A Write up by a Retd Maj General

Recently I came across a poster which said, 'Getting work done in this office is like the mating of elephants. It is done at a high level with immense grunting and groaning and it takes almost two years to produce results.' These words aptly define the Ministry of Defence. It has always moved at its own pace, never hurried, except when it directly impacts its own staffing or benefits. The last such case that moved with alarming pace was the review of the internal cadre of the MoD.

MEDUSA

MONSTER MEDUSA
By Major Gaurav Arya (Veteran)

Greek legend speaks of a female monster called Medusa, whose stare would turn men into stone and who had snakes in place of hair. This terrifying being destroyed everything in her path. The only way to end her terror was to behead her. Perseus, the Greek warrior, did this. By this act of beheading Medusa, he brought peace to Sarpedon.
On 14 August 1947, a part of the British Indian Army separated from its mother organization and became the Pakistan Army. It retained the flavor of its British creator; the parties, the spit and polish, the gin in the afternoon and whiskey in the evening, the 'hard as hobnailed leather' ethos and the drill square. Its officers were Pakistani in skin-tone but British in thinking. "Brown Sahibs" would have been an apt description.

We were no different.

Do you know what is the most powerful tool Pakistan has against India ???

It's neither the ISI nor the Lashkar, neither the Hizbul nor the Jaish. It is the powerful Coterie of the Lutyen's gang who are ready to support and defend the Terrorists with their subtle, sophisticated, intellectual treachery and create a narrative that puts the country's interests under the carpet.

UNSC-INDIA

SEAT - UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNSEL

Friends, It is really surprising that Arun Jaiteley, who is one of the leading lawyers and must be in the know of UNO and its charter had joined the bandwagon of ill informed followers, that Nehru had declined the offer of UNSC seat. Is he comparing the UNSC seat with the allocation of Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha seat to some disgruntled opposition candidates, like Tom Vadakkan, so that their loyalty could be subverted?

The recent controversies are about USA's offer in 1950 and the offer of USSR in 1955.

NIGERIA

ROME AT LAST

Now I come to some of the experiences I had in Nigeria and other overseas countries.
After spending a few weeks in Onitsha, Nigeria, where my brother, Umesh, had invited us, and Basanti was offered an English-conversation-teaching job, attracting much-needed foreign exchange, I alone was on my way to India for offering my resignation and starting a new life in Nigeria. The Alitalia flight from Lagos was via Rome; the very names, Rome, Italy, Europe were thrilling. For a long time it was my ambition which was about to be fulfilled. I had spent hours under the blue sky at Sunderbani praying fervently for a trip to Europe. My wish was about to be fulfilled; I had to take the last step. It was inexplicably thrilling and exciting. Movies like 'Roman Holiday' and 'Three Coins in the Fountain' flashed past.

KASHMIR

Kashmir : Between The Mughals And The Dogras

The exalted Vale of Kashmir. The powder keg Kashmir. The enigma Kashmir. The mere mention of this name triggers a huge range of human emotions and reactions that few other words do.

Most people are well aware of what happened after Independence in 1947 but few are aware of the twists and turns of history that the Valley went through to land at that particular juncture in 1947. I try and explain the passage of History right through the Mughals to the Afghans to the Sikhs and to the Dogras.

Ayodhya: Truth I Knew, Truth I Said

(A MUST READ BY ALL HINDUS AND MUSLIMS) Date: 29-Oct-2018 BY  K K Mohammed

The spirit of Ramajanmabhoomi movement is based on the crucial premise that the disputed structure was created after dismantling the Temple. Even before the movement the archaeological exercise was undertaken. The archaeological evidence collected by Prof Lal and his team, of which Dr K K Mohammed was a part, confirmed the presence of a huge pre-existing temple beneath the disputed structure. In his book, Njan Enna Bharatiyan, originally written in Malayalam, Dr Mohammad elaborated the whole process in this scientific exercise of revisiting history. Here are the excerpts from his book which can be crucial while discussing and deliberating on the Ayodhya issue:   K K Mohammed

COBRA

THE COBRA EFFECT

The Cobra Effect is a term in economics. It refers to a situation when an attempted solution to a problem makes the problem worse. This name was coined based on an incident in old colonial India.

By some reasons, there were too many venomous cobra snakes in Delhi. People were dying due to snake-bites and it became scary for almost everyone to step out of their houses.

As excerpts from Margaret Alva's book 'Courage and Commitment – An Autobiography' are making headlines, one after another, the fears of millions of  Bharatiya citizens are coming true – that Sonia Gandhi functions in an absolutely arbitrary manner and supports corrupt, anti-national activities and nexus. Alva is not the first to spill the beans on the political mafia kind of management that Sonia has adopted. Tavleen Singh, Sanjaya Baru, Natwar Singh, Jayanti Natarajan, Vinay Sitapati have all come out with similar accounts.

DOWNSIZING INDIAN ARMY

DOWNSIZING THE INDIAN ARMY

http://www.indiandefencereview.com/news/downsizing-the-indian-army/

The current exercise being undertaken by the Indian Army is reportedly to make it lean and mean. Whatever the interpretation, the main gain is supposed to be savings to the tune of Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 crore annually which can be used towards modernisation. Just last year, the government appointed the Shekatkar Committee had submitted its recommendations to the MoD saying if all its recommendations are implemented, Rs 25,000 crore will be saved. Ironically, the MoD only implemented what suited the bureaucracy. Army Base Workshops (ABW) were placed directly under the MoD after being privatised and posted with civilian defence employees. In addition, Military Farms were taken over by the MoD – imported cows, infrastructure and most importantly, defence land.

War fighters depend on signalers across the spectrum of operations.

A broad misconception is that the U.S. Army Signal Corps is a single-function organization, but its responsibilities have grown over time, and it is now a vital element of communications support that applies technology to ensure mission success. As much as the Army performs maneuver operations on land, it also performs signal offensive, defensive and stability operations in the cyber domain.

Cutting the defence budget: The invisible tail that no one talks about

Is the ministry of defence (MOD) appropriately structured to provide strategic and operational directions to the military and to handle situations in our borders? If what happened during the Daulat Beg Oldie incident in April 2013 is anything to go by where in an ad-hoc body called the 'China Study Group' consisting of the National Security Advisor and bureaucrats from other ministries including heads of central security agencies sidelined the MOD and took control of the situation, the MOD had abdicated its responsibility by failing to prepare itself for such contingencies by war-gaming and working out contingency plans and by integrating professionals in its organisation.

GREAT LISTENERS - HOW THEY DO IT

WHAT GREAT LISTENERS ACTUALLY DO
Chances are you think you’re a good listener.  People’s appraisal of their listening ability is much like their assessment of their driving skills, in that the great bulk of adults think they’re above average.
In our experience, most people think good listening comes down to doing three things:

LISTENING - THE LEADERSHIP TOOL

LISTENING IS AN OVEROOKED LEADERSHIP TOOL

“What do you think?”

I ask this question a lot. My team knows that when they come to me with a question, this is likely the question I’ll come back with first. Sometimes I even preface it with, “I don’t know.” As leaders in our organizations, it’s up to us to coach colleagues and our employees through finding that answer. More often than not, when I ask this question, my team has a better answer than I do — or one that I hadn’t thought about before.

DUNNING AND KRUGER EFFECT

What Is the Dunning-Kruger Effect?

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a type of cognitive bias in which people believe that they are smarter and more capable than they really are. Essentially, low ability people do not possess the skills needed to recognize their own incompetence. The combination of poor self-awareness and low cognitive ability leads them to overestimate their own capabilities.

TRUE MIRROR FOR INDIANS

By Dr. David Frawley, (American Institute of Vedic Studies, New Mexico, U..S.A.)

A defeatist tendency exists in the psyche of modern Indians perhaps unparalleled in any other country today. An inner conflict bordering on a civil war rages in the minds of the country's elite. The main effort of its cultural leaders appears to be to pull the country down or remake it in a foreign image, as if little Indian and certainly nothing Hindu was worthy of preserving or even reforming.
