  A SOLDIER'S VOYAGE OF SELF DISCOVERY - E-BOOK (PDF)

1.  We thank Maj Gen VK Singh to share this book with the Veterans of this Parivaar, which may be downloaded or printed.

2.  Gen KK Tewari , PVSM, AVSM, Signals, had written the autobiography, A Soldier’s Voyage of Self Discovery which was published by Auroville Press in 1995. His experiences of war are mind-boggling.

 His experiences of the Second World War are eye-openers. We all talk of the First Indian Brigade in Burma during the war in which all three battalions were Indian, commanded by Indian Officers, unlike the Two Indian and one British battalion of a normal brigade till then.  

3.  Maj Gen Tewari commanded 4 Inf Div Sig Regt during 1962 war. During those tumultuous  days of the Namka Chu incident, the

then Colonel Tewari as a true blue Signals Officer was at the front line with the 7 Infantry  Brigade Signalers. He was taken as PoW from one of the battalion location and lodged in a PW Camp in Tibet for 7 months. He narrates this incident when the most professional Commander of 7 Inf Bde, Brig John Dalvi got exasperated with his GOC, speaking on the telephone and handed over the telephone to Col Tewari and told him, if you don’t believe me, speak to your Commander Signals. General Tewari writes:

4.  Brig Dalvi was told not to flap but to obey orders and stay put. He was visibly upset and was very abrupt on the telephone to his boss. He passed the telephone to me saying, “You won’t believe me, Sir, but talk to your ‘bloody’ Commander Signals and he will tell you what all he can see with his naked eyes in front.” I spoke to the GOC equally strongly saying that one could see the Chinese moving down the Thagla Ridge like ants and also see at least half a dozen mortars which were not even camouflaged. Camouflage had obviously been removed in preparation to open fire. I added that the Chinese could not be there for a picnic and that their attack was imminent on a massive scale. I was told to concentrate on my work and not to worry.

On a fateful day after, when the Cdr Signals was in a bunker with his two signals radio operators with Gorkhas, he was taken prisoner. How he was taken prisoner is not a story to be proud of. But how he managed electrolytes for batteries by carrying jars full of electrolytes marked as Rum for troops, how his 2IC Maj Ram Singh who was doing the same thing was killed by the Chinese when the  the helicopter he was traveling to assess the situation so that the div  GOC could fly to the forward troups. should be known -------- and we must know by reading this book:-
