The collapse of the Afghan National Army (ANA), the hasty withdrawal of the US and the rapid gains of Taliban in Afghanistan have major lessons for military and political leadership. ANA lost it completely due to poor motivation and training. Its leadership was too political, corrupt, and unprofessional. Lesson: Nations cannot afford poorly trained and unprofessional armed forces dabbling in politics even if well equipped. The US is facing yet another major international embarrassment. Its political and military leadership were on the same page at combat level but on vastly different pages at political level. The US is facing a political defeat rather than a military one.

The training was so rigorous that it was but natural for all of us to eagerly look forward to the end of the term, so that we could take a well-deserved break. In the sixth term , being the seniors , the  cadets, indulge themselves  in minor privileges of bypassing some inconsequential unique to NDA regulations. In the year 1774,  Robert Clive  first set up a regular postal system in India and the first bungalows built to relay the post or 'dak'. Quickly, they became a network for the men who ruled India as they toured the districts, sometimes en famille. Before we know it, the dak bungalow has turned into a government circuit house.

Many things are said about who built the Kedarnath temple. Even from the Pandavas to Adya Shankaracharya. But we don't want to go into that.

Today's science suggests that the Kedarnath temple was probably built in the 8th century. Even if you say no, this temple has existed for at least 1200 years.

Mr Waseem Rizvi, former Chief of UP Shia Central Waqf Board, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court of India seeking for scrapping of 26 verses from the Quran that allegedly "promote terrorism, violence, jihad" and were not part of the original Quran but inserted at a later stage.

As soon as the news came in the public domain, all hell broke lose. Mr Rizvi was made out to be a pariah by his own community. There are Fatwas galore against him. Some radicals have even announced bounty on his head.

NAVAL UPRISING FEB 1946

* Not many of us will remember that today is the 75th anniversary of the Indian naval mutiny /uprising against the British rule /Royal Indian Naval officers(british)*. 

The prime mover of the uprising was one BC Dutt. The nerve center of the uprising was in Bombay based ships. In 1946 the civilian population of Bombay also supported it. Aruna Asaf Ali, a politician of yester years had supported the movement. The uprising continued in Bombay for 4-5days and for the first time, the blood of men in uniform and civilians was spilled in a common cause. Lest we forget

Remembered in Japan, forgotten in India........

The day was 12 November, 1948. Tokyo Trials are going on in a huge garden house on the outskirts of Tokyo, the trial of fifty-five Japanese war criminals including Japan's then Prime Minister Tojo, after losing WWII.
Of these, twenty-eight people have been identified as Class-A (crimes against peace) war criminals. If proved, the only punishment is the "death penalty".

General Thimayya, resigned on 31Aug 1959 for differences with Nehru and Krishna Menon over NEFA. There was a scare of military take over. Nehru persuaded him to withdraw his resignation. Two days later Nehru humiliated him in Parliament. The Indian army experienced its worst ever defeat during the Indo-China conflict of 1962. This excerpt from Shiv Kunal Verma's thoroughly researched book shows how Nehru and Krishna Menon conspired to discredit General Thimayya, setting in motion a chain of events that contributed to India's rout in the Himalayas.

In the Navy when equipment became faulty or something went wrong we would often say the cause must be "Fingeritis".

 After reading the Convening order 8608029/2/A (Coord) dated 25 Sep 2020 (Review of Medical cover for ESM) and 17 Jun 2019 for BOO (Examine Requirement of ECHS PCS in MH stations respectively) I noticed that both the letters are originated by Southern Command without any such requirement being indicated by any higher authority or the MoD at least in the convening orders and the word Fingeritis came to my mind and that is the genesis of the title of this piece.

India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) is unique in most aspects. No other country can boast of such a set-up.  Responsibility for India's national defence is discharged through MoD, which provides the policy framework and wherewithal to the armed forces. MoD has five Secretaries heading different departments.

1. Department of Defence (DoD). According to the Allocation of Business Rules of the government, the Defence Secretary heads DoD that is responsible for the defence of India and every part thereof, including preparation for defence and all such acts as may be conducive in times of war. In other words, he is tasked to ensure the defence of the country. Surprised? Yes, it is his responsibility and not that of the Service Chiefs, nor of the President or PM.
