About Consumers India

Brief details regarding each of these activities are given in the following paragraphs.

Introduce Product Recall System in India, Mr Prime Minister
India may be the world's second fastest growing economy with manufacturers regularly launching new and fancy consumer products, but the country is way behind in protecting consumer interests. Our Government cannot force any company to recall a faulty product. So, product recall in India is by and large a voluntary act. Only in the case of food and nutrition products can the government ask the manufacturer to take the product off the shelves. Even in these categories, incidents of recall are far and few.

In USA Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is an independent regulatory agency of the United States Government, responsible for protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury and death associated with consumer products. It has jurisdiction over approximately 15,000 different types of products used in and around homes, schools, recreation and otherwise. It posts names of all brands and products that have been recalled along with their background and performance on its website. This enables consumers to check the track record of a company and the performance of products. Such a system needs to be started in India as well.

The Consumer Protection Bill, 2018 had provisions for establishing a Consumer Protection Authority to investigate consumer protection issues, pass orders for recall of goods and against misleading advertisements and issue safety notices for goods and services. Alas! This important bill was allowed to be lapsed!!
Consumer Survey, carried out by interns as part of this study reveals that a whopping 78% of the respondents have come across a product that poses a health or safety risk, but 52% chose to ignore it. Amongst those who decided to act, 63% complained to the shopkeeper, while 24% complained to the manufacturer. Only 6%  filed a complaint in the consumer forum. 94% of the respondents think India should have a stringent Product Recall Policy.
Consumers India has reiterated its appeal to Prime Minister to take concrete steps to save consumers from hazardous products. Consumer friendly initiatives like 'Consumer Protection Bill, 2018' and Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill deserve priority attention. ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD!
Your gold jewellery may not be as pure or as precious as you think it is. Adulteration of gold with cheaper metals and  forgery of BIS Hallmark are some of the common methods adopted to dupe consumers.
'I have purchased 5 gold bangles set of 50 grams from a local jeweller in 2010. The jeweller did not give me a proper bill but gave me a plain slip. In 2018 when I went there to sell the jewelry back, the jeweller refused to take it back and also said that these are not real but are made from copper. When I showed him the hand-written slip he refused about the slip.'- Many consumers will relate to this tale of woe of Ms Geeta Verma!

This is the reason why you should buy only Hallmarked Gold. The catch in Gold Hallmarking is the number which indicates the purity of gold. Even 9 carat gold can be hallmarked. So please check the number before you buy hallmarked gold jewelery, as given below:
958 Corresponds to 23 Carat
916 Corresponds to 22 Carat
875 Corresponds to 21 Carat
750 Corresponds to 18 Carat
708 Corresponds to 17 Carat
585 Corresponds to 14 Carat
375 Corresponds to 9 Carat

Wish to know the truth about Ice-creams and Frozen Desserts?
In 2017 the brand Amul aired an advertisement showing how consumers are cheated in the name of ice cream and served frozen desert instead.
Hindustan Unilever (HUL) and Vadilal Group joined forces to take on "Amul" ice cream maker Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) over this television commercial, which allegedly belittles "frozen desserts". HUL that owns Kwality Walls alleged in Bombay High Court that such advertisement is misleading. Vadilal which also manufactures frozen desert showed common interest in the matter.
HUL wanted removal of the ad whereas, GCMMF alleged that it educated the consumers and helped them spot the difference between two relatively close terms that is ice cream and frozen desert (one being prepared from milk and the other one from vegetable oil).
A frozen desert must contain the tag of "frozen desert" on the product.
Later on, according to the orders of Bombay HC the ad was taken off air. However, it certainly helped in creating some awareness about the difference between ice cream and frozen desserts  amongst consumers.
Though frozen desserts are now being labelled as such even then the fact remains that majority of  consumers, as also ice cream sellers are not aware of the difference and buy/sell frozen desserts under the impression that it is ice cream!
The video prepared by the Group led by Pranav Sachdeva makes it amply clear. It can be seen on the following link:

Details of the earlier study carried out by the group led by Harleen Pasricha (B Com (H)-JMC-DU), during internship with Consumers India, can be seen on http://drjayashreegupta.blogspot.in/2014/07/truth-about-ice-creams-and-frozen.html
